Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates
Family: Cercopitecidae
Subfamily: Cercopitecinae
Genus: Macaca
The macaques apart from humans are the most common and widespread primate genus. They can be found from Africa to Japan. There are currently 22 species of macaque currently recognized. These include the Barbary Macaque (Barbary Ape) and the Rhesus Macaque (Rhesus Monkey). A colony of Barbary Macaques can be found on the Rock of Gibraltar. Macaques are true monkeys even though a number of species lack a tail.
They are highly intelligent animals displaying a variety of facial expressions and calls. The social organization of Macaques has been extensively studied and culturally transmitted behavioral differences have been observed.
Macaque coloration includes grey, brown or black fur. They are medium to large in stature and usually heavily built. Males and females tend to differ in weight, canine size and stature.
Macaque Monkeys are commonly used in medical and scientific research and experiments. HIV testing and cloning are among the most recent experiments to be carried out on Macaque Monkeys.
Recently scientists have cloned embryos from a 10 year old Rhesus Macaque Monkey.
